Luke 9:23-24, And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
On countless occasions and in many different ways, Jesus taught and retaught his disciples that following him was not simply a “walk in the park” on a nice summer day. Following Christ, according to Jesus himself, is to be a life of denial, death to self, and death to our fleshly selfish ambitions.
If you are anything like me, you know this is no easy task. This is absolutely, no “Disneyland Christianity” when it comes to taking up our cross. This is not Starbucks Christianity! Following Jesus wherever he might lead, picking up my cross, laying down my desires, my dreams, and my very life on the altar for the glory of God and the good of others just doesn’t come natural. If you are like me, you go down screaming! Again, it’s not natural, it’s supernatural!
If we are going to follow Jesus we must be willing to pick up our cross and “die” to anyone or anything that would prevent us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives. There’s just absolutely no other way.
Just taking a few moments to reflect on those red words of Jesus!!!
