Romans 12:1-2, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Like many of you, I love reading biographies. I especially enjoy reading biographies of missionaries. Other than reading the Bible, there’s nothing quite like reading the stories of the life and ministries of men such as Hudson Taylor, William Carey, Adoniram Judson, Jonathon Goforth, Daniel Mc Gilvary, C.T. Studd, and David Livingstone. Add to that the stories of woman like Amy Carmichael, Gladys Alyward, Elizabeth Kuhn, Rosalind Goforth and Katie Davis and you have enough inspiration to last for a long time!
What’s even better is to have the opportunity to meet a “legend!”
Soon after I arrived in Southeast Asia, I began to hear stories about a Filipino woman who came to Thailand over forty years ago as a single young lady. She was, according to many, a “living legend.” I had heard that God had used her to help start over 25 churches throughout various villages in the country of Thailand. Of course, I didn’t ask any questions on how she got those churches started. 🙂
Well, praise the Lord! My wife and I had the chance to meet her today at the Grace Baptist Church in Bangkok. Her husband was preaching. They now have a ministry in the prisons of Thailand. No small task, I am guessing! Brother Holmes shared some testimonies of former prisoners who were saved under his ministry who are now pastoring in Thailand.
Lourdes Holmes was even recognized by the Queen of Thailand [a Buddhist nation] for her efforts in loving and serving the Thai people. She was the only foreigner and the only Christian, in a group of 100 people, which included 80 high-ranking government officials, at the ceremony. She also shared the Gospel with the four others receiving a commendation that day while awaiting the ceremony to start. WOW!
You can read about it at http://garbcinternational.org/ipfbm/missionary-honored-by-thailand-queen/.
There’s definitely a lesson to be learned here: God can use anyone–young or old, single or married–who is willing to surrender himself or herself, anyone who will sell out totally for Christ and the cause of Christ. If God can use a single Filipino woman to reach hundreds, maybe thousands, of Thai people, I am guessing He can use you and me!
Just reflecting on a Filipina who God has used mightily!!!
