Matthew 25:1-4, 13, Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. … 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Ephesians 5:17-18, Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Jesus is coming again someday. It may be soon! Then, again, it might not be during my life time or yours. But of this we are certain, Jesus will return some day just as He said He would. May God help us to love, look for, long, and labour until Jesus returns!
The question is, “Will we be ready when He does return?”
As one commentator noted:
“The church has known for 2,000 years that Jesus is coming again, and yet many believers have become lethargic and drowsy. They are no longer excited about the soon-coming of the Lord. As a result, there is little effective witness given that the Lord is returning.”
This is the primary thought found in Matthew chapters 24:36-25:46. In Matthew 25:1-13, we are reminded of our great need to be ready for the return of Christ in relationship to the indwelling and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
While I definitely believe that the primary application of this parable is salvation. The wise virgins are those who are saved, and, therefore, have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. The foolish virgins are those who are not saved, and, therefore, do not have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. But I do think we can take a secondary application from this parable without doing a dis-justice to the scriptures. And that would be as a reminder to all of us of our great need for the Holy Spirit.
- We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit
- We need to be led by the Holy Spirit
- We need to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit
- W need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit
- We need to be walking, worshipping, and working in the Holy Spirit
As we get ready to enter a New Year and are preparing our goals and objectives, our calendars and scheules, let us not forget that without Jesus, we can doing nothing and without the Holy Spirit leading, guiding, directing, enlightening, and empowering all is in vain!
Just taking a moment to reflect on those foolish virgins with no oil in their lamps!
