“But they made LIGHT OF IT, AND WENT THEIR WAYS, ONE TO HIS FARM, ANOTHER TO HIS MERCHANDISE … Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden WERE NOT WORTHY” (Matthew 22:5,8).
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold not hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold or hot, I will spur thee out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16).
INDIFFERENCE or a lack of concern, and apathy are sure signs of one who has “left his first love” (Revelation 2:4), and one who has removed his hand from the plow of serving in the cause of Christ (Luke 9:62).
It would appear that a spirit of INDIFFERENCE is one of the prevailing spirits of our day, as it was in the days of Christ among the Jewish people, especially among their spiritual leaders!
If you begin reading in Matthew 21:23 and were to continue reading until the end of Matthew chapter 23, you would find Jesus’ message to the spiritual leaders of his day, which includes this parable. No doubt, a great warning for all of us today!
I am sure we can all attest to the fact that indifference is a problem that we struggle with often and a problem that is often difficult to recognize until it’s too late. It’s much like a virus. In fact, we could definitely call it a “spiritual virus.”
THE SPIRIT OF INDIFFERENCE COMES UPON US GRADUALLY!!!
Have you ever found yourself indifferent to God? Have you ever found yourself becoming indifferent to the word of God and prayer? Have you ever found yourself indifferent about church? Indifferent about worship? Indifferent to soul winning? Indifferent to the needs of those around you? Ever find yourself indifferent to the poor? How about indifferent to worldwide missions?
Been there, done that!
If we are not careful, if we do not “walk circumspectly” (Ephesians 5:15), we will find ourselves manifesting a spirit of INDIFFERENCE to both God and others, which of course, is a violation of the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-39)!
The biblical term for this attitude or spirit is of INDIFFERENCE is “lukewarm” (Revelation 3:16), and from both this parable in Matthew 22, and in our Lord’s rebuke of the Laodicean church it seems that this “virus” creeps upon us as we allow “stuff” to control our lives. Even those things that we once attributed to as “the blessings of God.” Or possibly the “virus” of indifference comes and then we attach ourselves to stuff (see Jeremiah 2:113).
Well, whichever one it is, it’s dangerous and highly contagious!!!
“When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God … Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 8:10, 11, 14)
