Doing a “Great Work” for a “Great God,” Part Seven

IMG_1084Nehemiah 6:3, ” … I am doing a GREAT WORK, so that I cannot come down to you.”

Nehemiah 6:15, “So the wall was finished …”

Over the past six posts we have looked at just a few of the many lessons from the life of a man named Nehemiah. A man who was probably living as comfortable of a life as a Jewish man could live in his day.

Yet, in the midst of Nehemiah’s comfort God came and changed the desires of his heart and the direction of his life, which resulted in Nehemiah finding his destiny in Christ, his purpose for living, his “Great Work” to be accomplished for his “Great God!”

We have seen that, by faith, Nehemiah heard what others did not hear. He saw what others did not see. He felt what others did not feel. And because of this,  Nehemiah was willing to sacrifice what others would not sacrifice. He was willing to go where others refused to go. And Nehemiah was willing to do what others would not do. The result of this was that Nehemiah accomplished what others not only did not accomplish, but what others never dreamed that he could accomplish. But he dreamed it, he saw it, and that’s all that mattered!

O Lord, give us some Nehemiah’s!

Nehemiah was a man of devotion, compassion, vision, and passion!

Someone has said, “We have lost the passion and power of that raw, untamed, and primal faith.”

Maybe this is why we aren’t seeing the “Great Works” of yesterday accomplished. For the most part, today, we just read about “Great Works” of the past, rather than pursuing “Great Works” for the present!

“Somewhere along the way the movement of Jesus Christ became civilized as Christianity. We created a religion using the name of Jesus Christ and convinced ourselves that God’s optimal desire for our lives was to insulate us in a spiritual bubble where we risk nothing, sacrifice nothing, lose nothing, worry about nothing.”

Such was NOT the way of Nehemiah. Nor shall it be the way of the men and women of our day who walk in the spirit of Nehemiah.

O Lord,  give us some Nehemiah’s!

Give us some men and women who are devoted to Christ and Christ alone. Give us some men and women of compassion for the hurting and the needy. Give us some men and women, who by faith, have a vision of what God desires to do in, and through their lives. God give us some men and women of passion-passionate for Christ and  the cause of Christ!

O Lord, give us some Nehemiah’s!

Give us men and women, who like Nehemiah of old, who refuse to settle in their comfort.  Give us some men and women who refuse to allow the mocking and opposition of others to cause them a reason to withdraw their hands from the plow of God’s purpose for their lives. Give us some men and women who have a mind to work, but not just for any work, but a mind for the “Great Work” you have created them for!

“THE LIFE THAT IS MOST POWERFULLY LIVED IS THE ONE that finds passionate urgency fueled by a sense of destiny.”

Just reflecting on the need for the Nehemiah spirit in our day!
