“When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faith for thirst, I the Lord will hear them … I will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. … That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the Hand of the Lord hath done this …” (Isa 41:17, 18, 20).
“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I WILL POUR MY SPIRIT upon they seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring” (Isaiah 44:3)
When I was a young man, and a new Christian, I heard a lot of preaching and teaching about the Holy Spirit and our great need of His power and presence in our lives and ministries. As young preacher boys, still in Bible college, we were encouraged to thirst for God and God’s power. We were admonished to pray for the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In fact, our pastor encouraged us to pray seven times a day for God’s power.
It seems that times have changed!
We don’t hear a whole lot of preaching and teaching about the power of the Holy Spirit in our life and ministry. At least not like we used to. Of course, one of the reasons for this is no doubt, the varying opinions and disagreements about this topic. But I think there is one thing we can all readily agree on —-
WE NEED GOD’S POWER; WE NEED GOD’S SPIRIT!
This morning, while reading the first four chapters in the Book of Luke, I was reminded of this truth. Over and over again we find the Holy Spirit filling, empowering, and leading God’s people and God’s Son, the Lord Jesus, to fulfill God’s purpose:
“… and he (John the Baptist) shall be filled with the HOLY GHOST” (Luke 1:15).
“… and Elizabeth was filled with the HOLY GHOST” (Luke 1:41).
“And his father Zacharias was filled with the HOLY GHOST …” (Luke 1:67).
“… and the HOLY GHOST was upon him” (Luke 2:5).
“And it was revealed unto him (Simeon) by the HOLY GHOST … And he came by the SPIRIT into the temple” (Luke 2:26-27).
“… He shall baptize you with the HOLY GHOST and with fire” (Luke3:16).
“And the HOLY GHOST descended upon in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him (Luke 3:22).
“And Jesus being filled with the HOLY GHOST ... was led by the SPIRIT into the wilderness” (Luke 4:1).
“And Jesus returned in the power of the SPIRIT …” (Luke 4:14).
“The SPIRIT of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel …” (Luke 4:18).
After reading these passages, you just have to wonder if God isn’t using Luke to try to convey an important truth in these passages. Remember, it was also Luke that wrote, “BUT YE SHALL RECEIVE POWER AFTER THE HOLY GHOST IS COME UPON YOU” (Acts 1:8).
We need HIS POWER to fulfill HIS PURPOSE!!!
And we probably aren’t going to have it, if we aren’t thirsting for it!!!
“Blessed are they which hunger and thirst …” (Matthew 5:6)
