John 13:34-35, A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Some of Jesus’ most important teaching, was also some of His last teaching. It was during His Last Supper discourse. In just a few hours, He will be taken into captivity. He will be falsely accused, mocked and mistreated. He will be scourged with a “cat with nine tails.” And, Jesus will die a cruel death on a cross at Calvary. It has often been said, “A man’s last words are His most important.” Again, these are some of the last, and yes, most significant words of Jesus to His disciples.
The first two important truths that Jesus taught His disciples at the Last Supper—
(1) The Importance of Serving Others, Especially Those “Under” Us (John 13:4-17), and
(2) The Importance of Loving One Another as Christ Has Loved Us (John 13:34-35).
Folks, these are the pre-requisites to being a true follow of Christ. These are two marks of biblical discipleship!!!
IT’S NOT “WHAT” WE KNOW THAT MAKES US A DISCIPLE OF JESUS, BUT “WHO” WE KNOW, “WHO” WE LOVE, AND “WHO” AND “HOW” WE SERVE!!!
I find it very interesting that almost immediately after teaching on SERVANTHOOD and LOVING OTHERS, Jesus says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the WORKS THAT I DO shall he do also …” (John 14:12)!
What works did Jesus do? Jesus SERVED THOSE UNDER HIM and JESUS LOVED UNCONDITIONALLY. So should we!!!
Just reflecting on the red letters of Jesus!!!
