“But I say unto you, That in this place is one GREATER THAN THE TEMPLE” (Matthew 12:6).
With these words to the Pharisees, Jesus was upsetting the status quo of His day. During the time of Christ, as far as the Jewish people were concerned, and especially the Jewish religious leaders of the day, EVERYTHING CENTERED AROUND THE TEMPLE!
Much of the daily life of the average Jewish man or woman, and again, especially the Jewish religious leaders of the day, revolved around the temple. Sound familiar? It should!
We all have a tendency to make life and ministry about someone or something other than Christ. Oh, don’t get me wrong, Jesus always has a place in our life and ministry, He has a part in our life and ministry, but if we are truly honest, more often than not Jesus isn’t the point of our life and ministry. In other words, Jesus isn’t pre-eminent, He’s simply prominent. And there is a big difference between those two words!
So for Jesus to make the claim that He was GREATER THAN THE TEMPLE was almost blasphemous. Just another reminder for us that JESUS IS GREATER than EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in your life and mine. At least He should be!
