“Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee” (Luke 18:28).
It’s been almost 2,000 years since Peter said these words. Peter, Andrew, James, and John were willing to leave everything behind to follow Jesus. They left their father, their family, their friends, their financial security, and everything that was familiar to them to follow Jesus into an unknown future.
If one follows the life and ministry of Jesus in the Gospels, he finds that everywhere Jesus went He was able to draw a crowd of people. There was something about Jesus that was so different than the religious leaders of His day. He loved and served people in such a way that was totally foreign to the religious elite of the day, who preferred to be loved and served by others. And because of this, you could almost always find multitudes of people flocking around Jesus!
While there were many who showed up for various meetings with Jesus, and many who chose to believe in Jesus, when it came time to actually follow Jesus, let alone leave all behind to follow Jesus, everything seemed to change.
There is a vast difference between BELIEVING IN JESUS and FOLLOWING JESUS. While there are MANY who choose to BELIEVE IN JESUS, there are FEW who choose to FOLLOW JESUS!
“My greatest fear, even now, is that I will hear the words of Jesus and walk away content to settle for less than radical obedience to him.”
