The Scriptures Point Us to Jesus

bibleJohn 5:39-40 (KJV) 39  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40  And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

If you read this passage in it’s context (the entire chapter), what you will find is that Jesus healed a sick man. The problem is that he did it on the Sabbath Day. And because of it, some of the Jews (most likely the Pharisees though the text doesn’t say so) wanted to kill Jesus. They wanted to kill Jesus, not simply because he healed on a holy day, but also because he claimed to be “equal with God” [John 5:18]. As he often did, Jesus uses this as a teachable moment, not only for his enemies, but for his disciples and teaches some powerful truths about the Father and the Son [John 5:19-47]. And it is from this teaching we find our text this morning.

The Jews of Jesus day, especially the religious leaders of the day, were men who “searched the scriptures.” Yet, the time they spent in the written word did not point them to the living Word. This is tragic and if we are not careful, the same thing can be true in our lives today!

Searching the scriptures should always point us to, and draw us closer to JESUS (John 5:39-40)!

As we search the scriptures, our LOVE FOR JESUS should increase. Our passion to KNOW JESUS should increase. Our willingness to OBEY JESUS should increase. Our desire to PLEASE JESUS should increase. Our desire to BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS should increase. Our willingness to SERVE JESUS wherever He might send us should increase!

And if it isn’t, we need to ask God to open our eyes to see the One who sits upon the Throne!!!

Just reflecting!!!
