And Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the seat of custom: and he saith unto him, follow Me. AND HE AROSE AND FOLLOWED HIM” (Matthew 9:9).
There are so many wonderful truths found in our Lord’s call of Matthew in Matthew 9:9-13. In this passage there are many lessons to learn and be applied to our lives and ministries. Here are a just few of them:
(1) Jesus was willing to call the most despised of men to follow him.
(2) Jesus seldom, if ever, told those he called to follow, where they were going.
“Followers of Jesus don’t always know WHERE they are going, but they always know WHO they are with.”
(3) Jesus expected and received immediate obedience to his call to follow.
In spite of the fact that he didn’t know where Jesus was taking him, he didn’t know the benefits Jesus was offering him, and he surely didn’t know the dangers that would one day befall him, Matthew didn’t just sit there when Jesus called. He arose and followed Jesus. And so should we!
Is Jesus calling you to GO somewhere? Is Jesus calling you to DO something?
Don’t let fear, family, friends, financial security, future ambitions, and familiarity keep you from arising to follow him!
“My biggest fear, even now, is that I will hear Jesus words and walk away … content to settle for less than radical obedience to him.”
