“He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? (Matthew 16:2-3).
Like the Pharisees of old, we are often much better at discerning THE FACE OF THE SKY AND THE WEATHER, than we are at discerning THE HAND OF GOD AND HIS WORKING!
This is especially true when it comes to the work of the harvest-the Great Commission. When I read these words today, I couldn’t help but think of something I experienced yesterday here in San Diego. Let me insert the words I posted yesterday concerning this experience:
“My wife and I are in San Diego for a few days. The whole world is on our doorstep. So many different ethnic groups (Chinese, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Filipino, Hispanic, and more). So many different languages. Just wondering if our churches are being Good Samaritans and ‘aggressively’ reaching out to them with the love of Christ!”
Sadly, most of us are far better at discerning the PATTERNS OF WEATHER than we are at discerning the PURPOSE AND PATTERNS OF GOD!
I just wonder if most of us can really “see” what God is doing, what God is up to, when it comes to reaching the “nations” for Christ, not only across the Pacific Ocean, but right next door!
“Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to Harvest” (John 4:35).
