jesus“After that he (Jesus) poureth water, into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. … For I have given you an EXAMPLE, that ye should do as I have done to you” (John 13:5, 15).

Our Lord Jesus lived a life of humble servanthood (Philippians 2:5-8). And he expected for his followers throughout the ages to do the same (Matthew 20:20-28). Someone has noted:

Over the last three decades, there has been a seismic shift across the landscape of the church. The advent of church-growth theory, coupled with exponential advances in technology, has created a hyperpursuit for leadership muscle that has never been seen before. Seminars and conferences have become trendy leadership fitness centers. Titans of business and megachurch pastors serve as leadership fitness trainers, while books and periodicals deliver leadership steroids and growth hormones. The goal of such industry? To create better leaders, stronger leaders, to make and multiply leaders.

Yet, even the most casual study of the scriptures, especially the New Testament, we will find that God isn’t looking for leaders nearly as much as He is looking for servants!

servantAnd the greatest acts of service are not when we SERVE THOSE OVER US (though we should), but when we humble ourselves to SERVE THOSE UNDER US, even those who would soon betray us.

This, my friend, is truly following the EXAMPLE of our Lord Jesus!!!
