“And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, SAVE (except) JESUS ONLY” (Matthew 17:8).
Like the disciples of old and so many of our spiritual forefathers, we tend to spend so much of our time, energy, and even money-the stuff life is made of-focusing our attention and affection on men, ministries, methods and models of ministry, and movements, rather than staying focused upon our Master. This ought not to be. As one author noted:
Christians have made the gospel about so many things—things other than Christ. But Jesus Christ is the gravitational pull that brings everything together and gives it meaning. Without Him, all things lose their value. … It is all too possible to emphasize a spiritual truth, value, virtue, or gift, yet miss Christ, who is Himself the embodiment and incarnation of all of these things. Seek Christ, embrace Christ, know Christ, and you will have touched Him who is Life. And in Him reside all truth, values, virtues, and gifts, in living color. Beauty has its meaning in the beauty of Christ. Only in Him do we find all that makes us lovely and lovable.
The followers of Jesus from the yesterday struggled with this, and we, the followers of Jesus today, tend to struggle with it. Who or what are you focusing upon?
“Looking unto JESUS the author and the finisher of our faith …” (Hebrews 12:2).
