“Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow Me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful for he had great possessions” (Matthew 19:21-22).
Have you ever noticed that there are some passages (actually quite a few of them) in the Bible that are more difficult, not only to understand, but to apply to our daily lives. They are far easier to teach and preach than they are to practice. 🙂
WE USUALLY SKIM OVER, IGNORE, OR TRY TO EXPLAIN AWAY PASSAGES SUCH AS THIS!!!
It may be difficult to explain everything in this passage, but there are some things that are very clear. Yes, there are so many lessons to be found in the story of the Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16-22). Let’s just ponder on four of the many lessons that can be learned in this story:
(1) God has a heart for the poor,
(2) Our sacrifices on this side of eternity bring a reward on the other side of eternity,
(3) Jesus is looking for “followers,” not simply “believers,”
(4) Most men would rather walk away from “following” Christ than give up what they love!
